Typically, a successful recovery program will encompass a sponsor or mentor in some form. 12 step programs are famous for their sponsorship protocol.

What does A.A. mean by sponsorship? In A.A., sponsor and sponsored meet as equals – essentially, the process of sponsorship is this: An alcoholic who has made some progress in the recovery program shares that experience on a continuous, individual basis with another alcoholic who is attempting to attain or maintain sobriety through A.A.  Whether you are a newcomer who is hesitant about “bothering” anyone, or a member who has been around for some time trying to go it alone, sponsorship is yours for the asking. Today, more and more alcoholics arriving at their first A.A. meeting have had no prior contact with A.A. In many successful groups, sponsorship is one of the most important planned activities of the members. Sponsorship responsibility is unwritten and informal, but it is a basic part of the A.A. approach to recovery from alcoholism through the Twelve Steps.

However, other recovery programs such as Life Ring Recovery or SMART Recovery do not encompass sponsorship into their programs. They are more secular in nature as well. Yet, inherent in these recovery processes is mutual support – perhaps more in the nature of a mentor rather than a sponsor.

Connection is at the root of any successful recovery program – whether it is in the form of a sponsor, a mentor or a friend.

It is critical to review and understand the policies and procedures of whatever recovery program you choose to integrate into your life. Ultimately, it is important and healthy to incorporate a “go to” individual into your recovery program – someone who has years of experience within that program.
